Body Fat Calculator

This body fat calculator is a free tool designed to help you estimate the percentage of body fat in your total body weight. Use a tape measure to determine your waist, wrist, hip and forearm circumference. You can also determine skinfold measurements using calipers. Check out our step by step guide to taking accurate and reliable measurements.

Once you’ve recorded your body measurements, input your numbers below to receive a body fat index based on average values. The body fat index is not an indicator of fitness level since the calculation is made with no regard to height or weight.

You can use the body fat percentage calculated here to determine additional results in another free tool, the Weight Loss Calculator.

Body Fat Percentage Categories

The chart below from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) is one of the most commonly used body fat charts. Women have a higher body fat percentage relative to men for a given level because of physiological differences such as hormones, breasts, and sexual organs. In addition, women need a higher amount of body fat for ovulation.

ClassificationWomen (% Fat)Men (% Fat)
Essential Fat10-12%2-4%
Athletes14-20%6-13%
Fitness21-24%14-17%
Acceptable25-31%18-25%
Obese32% +26% +

Essential Fat means the minimal amount of fat required for survival. Anything less than this amount would mostly likely result in organ failure, but even approaching this amount of body fat is dangerous. Even bodybuilders only approach this range during competitions then maintain a higher body fat percentage the rest of the time.

Body fat is essential to survival because fat protects your internal organs, provides necessary energy stores in times of need, and more.

Aim for the Fitness range if you’re goal is to get healthy and look in the mirror with pride.

The higher end of Acceptable and into Obese is where a decrease in body fat percentage will benefit your health.
